He was about to step onto the elevator that would take him two decks up to the bridge when the lighting dimmed. That meant one of two events had occurred. Provost Thoora had raised shields or set the engines thrust to maximum burn. He hurried along, willing the elevator to carry him faster, for either choice had only one outcome. Trouble.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

"They could have warned us first, you know," Herra yelped as she got Dauntless back under control. Waveskipper had raised shields, which buffed her smaller ship away, sending it careening through space. After she righted the tumbling ship, she would give the captain a piece of her mind. He was lucky none of their system had overloaded or that his energy shield caused any damage to Dauntless.

The only other person up front with her was Virgil, who had been fiddling with the console when she arrived. She had wanted to speak with him, just as she had with Chen, but she had only taken her seat when her board lit up.

He barked at her as if it was her fault he banged his head as he scrambled to hold on tight.

She barked back at him once she settled Dauntless and he settled in his chair.

"What was all that fancy maneuvering about? Showing off?" he said, rubbing the back of his head after strapping in.

"I don't know why Kohora's ship raised shield so fast. Why don't you make yourself useful and tell me?" she retorted.

The view outside showed her the engine drive of the big Ishalan ship. She did a spiral around and over the top of the bigger vessel, riding right above its exhaust drive. She raised Dauntless' shields as well. If they deemed it prurient, she wouldn't argue until Virgil gave her a reason to.

"What do you have for me, Virgil?"

"I'm double checking it, hoping I'm wrong. The wormhole is spiking."

Herra swallowed and shot her ship forward, stopping at the edge of Waveskipper's bow. She strained her eyes to catch a glimpse of the wormhole off in the distance. Through the energetic turmoil surrounding it, a form took shape. Sensor readings showed it was big.

"Are they back?" Virgil breathed.

She hoped to the universe they weren't. Her hands gripped the flight sticks until her fingers tingled, just in case. She tapped her console.

"Chen, I need you up here, now."

Not a moment later, she showed up.

"I was on my way commander, I needed to wait for the ship to stop spinning."

Herra grunted at her and took a glance over her shoulder. Without another word, Chen was in her seat and hunched over her screen.

"Long range sensors show…" Chen paused. "It's Europa!"

"Europa?" both she and Virgil spat out.

"Yes, the signal checks out."

"Should I hail them?" Virgil asked.

The energy flux died down and sure enough, the profile of the ship against the lingering display of colors sure looked like Europa. Why had Lawson come here? Was he following her? She was sure, to her sorrow, that Lawson would want nothing to do with her after what she pulled.
